Abstract
This study is aimed to discover the parenting style applied by the mother and father in the novel “The Railway Children”. The study is also aimed to reveal the characteristics possessed by Roberta, Peter, and Phyllis as the influence of parenting style. This study is qualitative research. In conducting this study, the writer uses theories such as the Objective Theory, Theory of Literary Psychology, Theory of Parenting Styles, Theory of Character and Characterization, and Theory of Personality. In collecting data, the writer uses the library research method. The primary data source that the writer uses is the novel “The Railway Children”. Then the secondary sources in this study include journals, thesis papers, books, and articles on the internet. To collect the data, the writer reads the novel and records the important things into the notes. This study shows that mother and father figures use authoritative parenting toward their children, Roberta, Peter, and Phyllis. The writer also finds out that authoritative parenting influences the children's characteristics. Roberta, Peter, and Phyllis, who got the authoritative parenting, have positive characteristics. They are self-reliant, well-behaved, and obedient to their parents’ messages.
