Abstract

This study discusses the struggles of man in the middle of an epidemic in London’s The Scarlet Plague (1970), which aims to find out the kind James’s struggling during and after the Scarlet Plague. This is also to show the result and ending of James’s life after his struggle. This study is a qualitative research with content analysis method. The object of this study is Prof. James Smith and his survival to avoid any dangerous during and after the Scarlet Plague. The data taken are words, phrases, and sentences found in the novel. The writer used note taking as instrument of the study. The study employs objective approach and sociology theory to support the analysis. The writer finds two kinds of James’s struggles during the Scarlet Plague: struggling from the plague attack and surviving from the human crime crisis. James’s struggles after the plague are struggling for safe place to live, struggling by hunting, and struggling to get social life. The implication of those struggles are human struggles to avoid the dangerous in life and to achieve major needs. Finally, James’s struggle ends to the ancient life where humans live in limit knowledge and skills. This study shows that London’s The Scarlet Plague (1970) represents the struggles of humans in general. When a man fights for a goal seriously, the end of struggle will produce a good result.
