Abstract

Friends with benefits (FWB) relationship is popular nowadays. FWB is friendships with sexual intimacy without any commitment. This relationship is found in the characters of Meursault and Marie in the novel The Stranger (1942). Therefore, this study analyzes friends with benefits that occur in the two characters using Stenberg’s triangular love. The first objective is to find out the type of love in friends with benefits of Meursault and Marie’s relationship. Second objective is to describe the form of their friends with benefits relationship. Third objective is to find out why they have friends with benefits relationship. This research is library research with novel The Stranger as the main data. The result of this research is that the type of love in Meursault and Marie’s relationship is liking. The form of their friends with benefits relationship is that they have intimacy in the form of sexual activity without any commitment. Their friends with benefits type of relationship is unintentional. There are three reasons for them to have friends with benefits relationship. The reason are to avoid emotional attachment, to need and like sexual activity, and to have fun.
