Abstract

This study aims to identify the illocutionary act types and paradigm cases in the “Johnny’s Communication Center” vlog. The writer proposes two research questions: (1) What are the types of illocutionary acts found in Johnny’s utterances in the “Johnny’s Communication Center” vlog? and (2) What are the paradigm cases underlying the illocutionary speech acts performed by Johnny in the “Johnny’s Communication Center” vlog? The writer employed qualitative research and content analysis as the methodology in the study. The vlog for this study is taken from the six most popular content Johnny’s Communication Center on YouTube. Johnny performed 204 utterances as the data of the study. The findings showed that Johnny's utterances employed five types of illocutionary acts: representative, directive, expressive, commissive, and declarative. The representative act became the most frequent type in Johnny’s utterances. 21 paradigm cases occurred based on the types that underlie them. The representative act had five cases; directive act had four cases; expressive act had eight cases; the commissive act had three cases, and the declarative act had one case. The study found that paradigm cases of expressive act mostly underlie illocutionary acts inside Johnny’s utterances. In conclusion, the writer presented two decisions based on the findings. First, Johnny mostly used representative act in his dialogue in the vlog. Second, paradigm cases of expressive act underlie the illocutionary acts performed by Johnny.
