Abstract

This study analyzes the idiomatic expressions in the 2017 movie, The Boss Baby. The writer of this study discusses three problems; 1) What are the types of idiomatic expressions found in the movie The Boss Baby? 2) What are the meanings of idiomatic expressions found in the movie The Boss Baby? 3) Which idiomatic expression dominates the data found in The Boss Baby? The data of the study were identified and described through the use of a descriptive qualitative method. The writer employed O'Dell and McCarthy's theory to classify and analyze the data. Based on O'Dell and McCarthy, idioms are divided into six types: similes, binomials, proverbs, euphemisms, clichés, and fixed statements. One hundred seven data found in the movie are included in the six types of idioms based on O'Dell and McCarthy's theory. The writer found 4 similes (4%), 2 binomials (2%), 2 proverbs (2%), 8 euphemisms (7%), 3 clichés (3%), and 88 fixed statements (82%) in the movie. Due to the repetition of the idioms, 30 examples are used to determine the meanings. The 30 data represent all six categories of idioms. The writer employed two methods, namely through the context of the movie and dictionaries, to explain the meaning. Fixed statements are found to be the dominating idiom in the movie.
