Abstract

The thesis aims to analyze the word formation types used in the COVID-19 pandemic terms and find the most productive kind of word formation. Specifically, the pandemic terms are found in online news published from December 2019 until March 2021. In carrying out this thesis, the author applied the descriptive qualitative research method with the theory of George Yule for classifying the terms. Based on the results of data analysis, the author found 61 terms grouped into five types of word formation; 12 compoundings, 32 blendings, two acronyms, three derivations, and 12 multiple processes. Therefore, the most productive type is blending, with 52.46%. Blending becomes the most productive type as it has characteristics that relate to the traits of the youth today, as the creator of many blended words. The first characteristic is shortening words, which correlates with youths preferring to text others in short. The second is being recognizable, which correlates with youths doing weird things to be famous.
