Abstract

This study aims to determine the speech disfluency of the characters in Wonder's (2017) movie. The theory that supports this study is the theory proposed by Fox-Tree (1995) and MacGregor (2008), and Bortfeld et al. theory (2001). This analysis focuses on the types of speech disfluency, namely silent pause, repetition, filled pause, repairs, false start, and lexical fillers, as well as the factors namely processing load, coordination functions, familiar versus unfamiliar conversational partners, age, gender, and effects of these variables upon disfluencies. The objective of this study is (1) to find out the types of speech disfluency found in the movie Wonder (2017) and (2) to find out what factors influence the occurrence of speech disfluency in the film Wonder (2017). This study uses a qualitative method by Moleong. The analysis shows that there are 18 data of types of speech disfluency, 3 data from silent pause, 2 data from repetition, 5 data from filled pause, 1 data from repairs, 2 data from the false start, and 5 data from lexical fillers. The most dominant type of speech disfluency in Wonder's (2017) movie is filled with pauses with 5 data and lexical filler with 5 data. There are factors causing speech disfluency, and they are processing load (8 data), coordination functions (3 data), familiar versus unfamiliar conversational partners (1 data), age (1 data), gender (1 data), effects of these variables upon disfluencies (2 data). The most dominant factor that causes speech disfluency in Wonder's (2017) movie is the processing load with 8 data.
