Abstract

This study aims to find out the types of errors in using simple past tense in recount text and the percentage of each error made by students of class VIII A at SMP Negri 3 Tempel. To achieve the research aim, the researcher used a mixed method. The sample of this study was class VIII A students at SMP Negri 3 Tempel, with a total of 15 participants. Due to COVID-19, the school only provides half of the class every day, so the participants were divided into two and used two teachers for each main class. Data were collected through students' written homework. The findings of this study showed that there were 45 total errors made by students, which were considered into four categories based on the taxonomy of surface strategies. The errors found were Misformation errors with a total of 35 errors or 78%, omission with a total of 5 errors or 11%, addition with a total of 3 errors or 7%, and misordering errors with a total of 2 errors or 4%. Keywords: Error Analysis, Recount Text, Simple Past Tense Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui jenis-jenis kesalahan dalam penggunaan simple past tense dalam teks recount dan persentase setiap kesalahan yang dilakukan oleh siswa kelas delapan A di SMP Negri 3 Tempel. penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui seberapa jauh siswa SMP Negeri 3. Untuk mendapatkan hasil penelitian metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode gabungan. Sampel penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas VIII A SMP Negri 3 Tempel dengan jumlah peserta 15 orang. Karena COVID-19 sekolah hanya menyediakan setengah kelas setiap hari, sehingga peserta dibagi dua dan menggunakan dua guru setiap mata pelajaran. Data dikumpulkan melalui pekerjaan rumah tertulis siswa. Temuan penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa ada 45 total kesalahan yang dibuat siswa yang masuk sebagai empat kategori berdasarkan surface strategy taxonomy. Kesalahan yang ditemukan adalah Misformation error sebanyak 35 kesalahan 78%, omission error sebanyak 5 kesalahan atau 11%, addition error sebanyak 3 kesalahan atau 7%, dan kesalahan misordering dengan total 2 kesalahan atau 4%.
