Abstract

English education students at Universitas Teknologi Yogyakarta found some difficulties and errors in writing descriptive texts, especially grammatical errors. Some of them think this error is understandable and does not need too much attention; they also often avoid using grammar because they feel difficulties and confusion in using grammar rules. So these issues led the researcher to determine what errors are made and the dominant errors made by students in writing descriptive text. This research only focuses on using simple present tense in writing descriptive text. A descriptive qualitative research design was used in the present study. The respondents were 30 (5 males and 25 females), fourth-semester students at the English Langauge Department in the academic year 2020/2021. The research data was documentation. Data were analysed qualitatively. The researcher presents the dominant types of errors in the form of amounts for each error using a table. The result of this research showed that students made four types of mistakes, addition with 47 errors, misformation with 51 errors, misordering with 16 errors, and omission with a total of 60 errors, which is the dominance of mistakes in these four types of error, so the total error is 174 errors. Keywords: Error Analysis, Errors Types, Simple Present Tense, Descriptive Text Mahasiswa pendidikan bahasa Inggris di Universitas Teknologi Yogyakarta menemukan beberapa kesulitan dan kesalahan dalam menulis teks deskriptif, terutama dalam kesalahan tata bahasa, beberapa dari mereka berpikir bahwa kesalahan ini dapat dimengerti dan tidak perlu terlalu diperhatikan, mereka juga sering menghindari penggunaan tata bahasa karena merasa kesulitan dan kebingungan dalam penggunaan aturan tata bahasa. Maka permasalahan ini lah yang akan peneliti analisis untuk mengetahui kesalahan apa yang dilakukan dan kesalahan dominan yang dilakukan siswa dalam menulis teks deskriptif. Penelitian ini hanya fokus pada penggunaan simple present tense dalam menulis teks deskriptif. Desain yang digunakan pada penelitian ini adalah deskriptif kualitatif. Responden penelitian adalah mahasiswa semester IV, 30 mahasiswa (5 laki-laki dan 25 perempuan) Jurusan Bahasa Inggris Universitas Teknologi Yogyakarta tahun ajaran 2020/2021. Data penelitian adalah dokumentasi. Data dianalisis secara kualitatif. Peneliti menyajikan jenis kesalahan yang dominan berupa jumlah untuk setiap kesalahan menggunakan tabel. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa siswa melakukan empat jenis kesalahan, yaitu kesalahan penambahan sebanyak 47 kesalahan, kesalahan formasi dengan jumlah sebanyak 51 kesalahan, kesalahan susunan sebanyak 16 kesalahan, dan kesalahan penghilangan dengan jumlah kesalahan sebanyak 60, yang merupakan dominasi kesalahan pada keempat kesalahan tersebut, jadi total kesalahan berjumlah 174 kesalahan.
