Abstract

This research focuses on the paranoid personality disorder of the main character seen in The Others. There are three problems in this research. The first problem is finding out how depiction the paranoid personality disorder of Grace in the film. The second is knowing the cause of Grace being a paranoid woman. And the third is finding a solution to the problem that Grace has. The writer uses objective theory from Abrams and psychoanalyst from Sigmund Freud to assist the writer in analyzing the subject matter. In this study, the writer finds the paranoid personality disorder of Grace seen in the film through conversations, actions, and scenes. To know that Grace is a person with paranoid personality disorder, the writer involves three parts of the human mind about personality structure. Then, the writer finds the reasons that triggered Grace's paranoid personality disorder. Anne and Nicholas, Grace's children, suffer from photosensitivity. It is the reason why Grace becomes a paranoid person. Therefore, Grace protects her children from things that endanger her children's life. At the last discovery, strange events occur in the house to unsettle Grace. Grace accuses her new maids of deliberately causing trouble at home. However, one day Grace believes there is an intruder, so Grace insists on finding the intruder. In this case, the involvement of other characters influences Grace in dealing with her paranoid personality disorder. Ada tiga permasalahan pada penelitian ini. Permasalahan yang pertama adalah menemukan bagaimana gambaran gangguan kepribadian paranoid dari Grace pada film. Yang kedua adalah mengetahui penyebab Grace menjadi wanita paranoid. Sementara itu, yang ketiga adalah menemukan solusi dari permasalahan yang Grace miliki. Selain itu, penulis menggunakan teori objektif dari Abrams dan psikoanalis dari Sigmund Freud guna membantu penulis dalam menganalisis pokok bahasan. Dalam penelitian ini, penulis menemukan gangguan kepribadian paranoid Grace yang terlihat dalam film melalui percakapan, tindakan, dan adegan. Untuk mengetahui bahwa Grace adalah seorang penderita gangguan kepribadian paranoid, penulis melibatkan tiga bagian dari pikiran manusia tentang struktur kepribadian. Kemudian, penulis menemukan alasan yang memicu gangguan kepribadian paranoid Grace. Anne dan Nicholas, selaku anaknya Grace, menderita fotosensitifitas. Itulah alasan mengapa Grace menjadi penderita paranoid. Oleh karena itu, Grace melindungi anak-anaknya dari hal-hal yang membahayakan nyawa anak-anaknya. Pada penemuan terakhir, kejadian aneh terjadi di rumah tersebut hingga meresahkan Grace. Grace menuduh pelayan barunya sengaja membuat masalah di rumah. Namun, suatu hari Grace yakin ada penyusup, sehingga Grace bersikeras untuk mencari penyusup tersebut. Dalam hal ini, keterlibatan karakter lain mempengaruhi Grace dalam menghadapi gangguan kepribadian paranoidnya. Keywords: gangguan kepribadian paranoid, tiga bagian dari pikiran manusia, the others
