Abstract
This study aims at knowing the practices of self- defense mechanism in Eugene O’ Neill’s play entitled, Long Day’s Journey into Night. The study is considered as descriptive and qualitative research. The play as the main source of data needed by the writer. To analyze the data collected, the writer gets a help from two theories, Objective Theory which has helped her deal with the intrinsic aspects of the play and Psychological Theory especially Sigmund Freud’s theory related with self-defense mechanism. In collecting the data, the writer examines the characterization and the plot of the play. Through the actions, attitudes, and actions of the characters the writer then makes a categorization and analysis based on self-defense mechanism theory. The writer has found that almost all the members of Tyronn Family, including the main character, are facing life problems and mostly face their problems using self-defense mechanism. The writer concludes that the self-defense mechanisms used are a) denial, b) repression, and c) projection. The play shows how the ways to solve problems are not really effective
