Abstract

This is a study about relation in truth and conception of English loanwords found in the Scarlet Letter novel by Nathaniel Hawthorne. This paper will look for three objectives: to investigate the uncertainty in finding dynamic relation between truth and conception. To explore the differences between them and conclude the dominant aspect of language which plays a significant role behind it. There are four major theories used in this paper: Morphology, Ogden and Richards Semiotic Triangle, Gricean theory of Implicature and Truth. In order to process data, this paper used quantitative type of research. There are two kinds of data: Primary data resourced from The Scarlet Letter Novel by Nathaniel Hawthorne and secondary data resulted from Douglas Harper's online etymology dictionary and three different online dictionaries: Oxford, Collins and Merriam Webster Online Dictionary. This paper analysed the data based on simulative semiotic triangle and semantic change in viewing the lexical meaning. The data collected selectively after three processes: scanning, testing and qualifying. After this, the appropriate loanword will be decided whether or not belongs to the possible categories. Through this analysis, the result shows that the dynamic relation between truth and conception of English loanwords found in the Scarlet Letter novel by Nathaniel Hawthorne exists yet insignificant Proven by overall percentage of meaning shift between (EC) 109 (34,49%) from 316 data. The difference between dynamic relations relies on each meaning shift indicator which shows different results and proving meaning stability rather than dynamicity acquired by the percentage on all indicators EW: 176 (55.70%), EC: 207 (65.51%) and CW: 244 (77.22%). According to this circumstance, the most dominant aspect which influences it is meaning stability by the percentage on all indicators EW: 176 (55.70%), EC: 207 (65.51%) and CW: 244 (77.22%).
