Abstract
This study examines Sherlock Holmes’ awareness and how it becomes the key to solve his cases in a book entitled a Study in Scarlet by Arthur Conan Doyle under the scope of objective criticism. This study is also supported by some other theories such as Phenomenology by Husserl and Grounded Theory by Glaser and Strauss. This study is descriptive-qualitative research. Data are obtained by reading the book and selecting dialogues that contains data which are needed. The finding of the study shows that Holmes’ technique of deduction makes use of Husserl’s Phenomenology and Glaser and Strauss’ Grounded Theory as a method to solve the cases. The reason phenomenology used is that Holmes is always alert to his surrounding while the reason of using Grounded Theory is that Holmes can link each data from his surrounding and draw conclusions based on them. The result of this study is a formula used by Holmes to reveal the mystery
