Abstract
This study aims at knowing the characterization of the main characters in Edith Nesbit’s novel entitled The Railway Children. The study is considered descriptive and qualitative research. The novel is the main source of data used by the writer. To analyze the data collected, the writer gets help from a theory proposed by Abrams, named objective theory, the theory is needed to help the writer deal with the intrinsic aspects of the novel such as characterization, plot, setting, and theme. In collecting the data, the writer examines the characterization through the characters depicted in the work and the plot. Through the actions, attitudes, and actions of the characters, the writer then makes a categorization and analysis based on the objective theory. In her study, the writer found that the characterization of the novel is very good and able to make the story interesting to read. The writer found that in the novel there are three main characters: Roberta, Peter, and Phyllis. They are depicted as children who are a) kindhearted, b) responsible, c) caring, and d) mature because of the difficult situations they face in their lives. Penelitian ini bertujuan mengetahui karakterisasi tokoh utama dalam novel Edith Nesbit yang berjudul The Railway Children. Penelitian ini tergolong penelitian deskriptif kualitatif. Penulis menggunakan novel tersebut sebagai sumber data utama. Untuk menganalisa data yang terkumpul, penulis dibantu oleh sebuah teori yang diajukan oleh Abram yang disebut teori objektif. Teori tersebut diperlukan untuk membantu penulis memahami aspek-aspek intrinsik novel tersebut antara lain karakterisasi, plot, setting, dan tema. Untuk mengumpulkan data, penulis mencermati karakterisasi melalui tokoh-tokoh yang ditampilkan dalam novel dan melalui alur cerita. Berdasar perilaku para tokoh dan percakapan mereka, penulis membuat kategorisasi dan analisa sesuai teori objektif. dari penelitian ini penulis telah mendapati bahwa karakterisasi novel tersebut sangat bagus dan bisa membuat cerita menarik. Penulis menemukan bahwa dalam novel tersebut ada tiga tokoh utama yaitu Roberta, Peter, dan Phyllis. Mereka ditampilakan sebagai anak-anak yang a)baik hati, b) bertanggungjawab, c) ,peduli, dan d) dewasa berkat situaasi sulit yang mereka hadapi dalam kehidupan mereka.
