Abstract

Irony is a marvelous idea in literature history which is widely used as a figure of language. In the story titled The Invisible Man narrated by Herbert George Wells, the journey of Griffin with his destitution depicts ironic events. These events can be both seen from the character’s and the audience’s perspective. This study has two objectives: 1) to describe and classify the types of irony, and 2) to identify from which type an irony is the most prominent or dominant among the many types of irony. This research is a qualitative descriptive research. In the implementation, the writer uses an objective approach and several supporting theories discussing irony as a theoretical basis and analysis. To execute this research, the writer uses literature study. The writer employs reading and note-taking analysis to collect data. This study found that there are three types of irony, that is verbal irony, situational irony, and dramatic irony. Among these three ironies, it was found that situational irony is the most common type of irony. Ironi ialah sebuah ide cemerlang dalam lingkup sejarah kesusastraan yang banyak digunakan sebagai majas. Di dalam kisah novel The Invisible Man yang dinarasikan oleh Herbert George Wells, Perjalanan hidup Griffin dengan kenistaannya mendeskripsikan kejadian-kejadian ironis. Kejadian ironis ini dapat diketahui melalui dua perspektif, yakni perspektif karakter dan audiens. Penelitian ini memiliki dua tujuan: 1) mengklasifikasikan jenis-jenis ironi, dan 2) menyimpulkan dari jenis apa suatu ironi tersebut yang paling menonjol atau dominan di antara banyak jenis ironi. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian deskriptif kualitatif. Selain itu, penulis menggunakan pendekatan objektif sastra dan beberapa teori-teori pendukung yang membahas ironi sebagai dasar teori dan analisa. Dalam implementasi penelitian ini, penulis menggunakan studi pustaka. Penulis menggunakan analisis pembacaan dan pencatatan untuk mengumpulkan data. Penelitian ini menemukan bahwa terdapat tiga jenis ironi yakni ironi verbal, ironi situasi, dan ironi dramatis. Di antara ke-tiganya, ditemukan bahwa ironi situasi adalah jenis ironi yang paling banyak ditemukan.
