Abstract
This research is a study of symbols and meanings. The object of study is John Steinbeck's novel Of Mice and Men. The purpose of this study is to analyze the symbols and meanings contained in the novel. This research uses qualitative descriptive methods and literature studies, with semiotic approaches, symbol theory and meaning theory. In data collection, researchers used repeated reading and note-taking techniques. The result of this study found eleven symbols contained in objects, place settings and characters, then classified into Traditional Symbols and Personal Symbols. The symbols found include mice symbol of destiny, the rabbits’ symbol of false hope, dog symbol of power, the south symbol of warmth and comfort, the river symbol of a safe place, the bunkhouse a symbol of migrant workers life, the ranch symbol of the working class, Lennie symbol of innocence, George symbol of male friendship, Curley's wife symbol of sexism, Crooks symbols of racism. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian tentang simbol dan makna. Objek yang diteliti pada penelitian ini adalah novel dari John Steinbeck yang berjudul Of Mice and Men. Tujuan dari penelitian ini yaitu untuk menganalisis simbol dan makna yang terdapat dalam novel. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif dan studi pustaka, dengan pendekatan semiotika, teori simbol dan teori makna. Dalam pengumpulan data, peneliti menggunakan teknik pembacaan berulang dan pencatatan. Hasil dari penelitian ini yaitu ditemukan sebelas simbol yang terdapat pada objek, latar tempat dan karakter, lalu diklasifikasikan menjadi Simbol Tradisional dan Simbol Personal. Simbol-simbol yang ditemukan diantaranya yaitu tikus simbol dari takdir, kelinci simbol dari harapan yang salah, anjing simbol dari kekuatan, arah selatan simbol dari kehangatan dan kenyamanan, sungai simbol dari tempat yang aman, rumah susun simbol dari kehidupan para pekerja imigran, peternakan simbol dari kelas pekerja, Lennie simbol dari kepolosan, George simbol dari pertemanan laki-laki, Curley's wife simbol dari seksisme, Crooks simbol dari rasisme.
