Abstract

Novel lovers are often drawn into the fictional worlds created by novelists, such as gothic novels. Gothic novels are a genre of novels that have a nuance of terror with the background of an old castle or monastery. The story of the novel Northanger Abbey tells how the development of Catherine Morland as the main character who likes gothic novels. Therefore, this study analyses the character of Catherine formed from gothic novels. The writer has three objectives: the first ojective is the changes in attitude towards Catherine's character from Gothic novels, the second objective aims to the reasons for the formation of habits in Catherine's character, and the third objective aims to the impact of Catherine's habits and character from gothic novels on herself and others. The research method used is qualitative, and the objective theory focuses on the elements of the novel. The writer uses objective theory, gothic, and psychoanalysis in English literature. The research results show that there are changes in Catherine's attitudes and habits that are influenced by reading gothic novels. The three main factors that lead to this habit are environmental limitations, interest in presenting gothic novels, and overactive imagination. These changes and habits impact herself and others, especially her relationships with other characters, Henry, Isabella, and General Tilney. Para pecinta novel sering kali terjerumus ke dalam dunia fiksi yang diciptakan oleh para penulis novel, seperti novel gotik. Novel gotik merupakan salah satu genre novel yang bernuansa teror dengan latar belakang kastil atau biara tua. Kisah novel Northanger Abbey menceritakan bagaimana perkembangan Catherine Morland sebagai tokoh utama yang suka novel gotik. Oleh karena itu, penelitian ini menganalisis karakter catherine yang terbentuk dari novel gotik. Penulis memiliki tiga tujuan, 1) Perubahan sikap terhadap karakter Catherine dari novel Gotik, 2) Alasan terbentuknya kebiasaan pada karakter Catherine, dan 3) Dampak dari kebiasaan dan karakter Catherine dari novel gotik terhadap dirinya sendiri dan orang lain. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah kualitatif dan teori objektif terfokus pada elemen novel. Penulis menggunakan teori objektif, gotik, dan juga psikoanalisis sastra. Penelitian ini menggunakan tinjauan pustaka dari studi pustaka yang sudah diteliti Hasil penelitian menunjukkan adanya perubahan sikap dan kebiasaan Catherine yang dipengaruhi dari membaca novel gotik. Tiga faktor utama yang menyebabkan kebiasaan ini adalah lingkungan yang terbatas, ketertarikan pada presentasi novel gotik, dan imajinasi yang berlebihan. Perubahan dan kebiasaan ini memiliki dampak pada dirinya sendiri dan orang lain, terutama pada hubungannya dengan karakter lain seperti Henry, Isabella, dan Jendral Tilne
