Abstract

This study aims to analyze the function of the imaginary companion in the novel. The first objective is to analyze the characteristics of the imaginary companion’s creator. The second objective is to analyze the imaginary companion’s characteristics. The third objective aims to find out the function of the imaginary companion in the novel. This study is descriptive qualitative research. The writer uses the objective approach to conduct the study. DiYanni Robert’s theory of character and characterization and Eva Hoff’s theory of the function of imaginary companions are used as the foundation of this research. Reading and note-taking techniques are used to collect the data. This study finds that the main character has Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The imaginary companion, on the other hand, is a mature figure who often acts as his protector or guardian. The reason why his imaginary companion can last long is that the main character needs him to cover up for his weaknesses and become his companion at the same time. Thus, the novel illustrates how important imaginary companions are for children, especially for disabled children. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis fungsi dari teman khyalan dalam novel. Tujuan pertama dari penulisan penelitian ini adalah untuk menganalisis sifat si pembuat teman khayalan. Tujuan yang kedua adalah menganalisis sifat si teman khayalan. Tujuan ketiga bertujuan untuk mengetahui fungsi dari teman khayalan dalam novel. Penelitian merupakan penelitian deskriptif kualitatif. Penulis menggunakan pendekatan objektif untuk melakukan penelitian ini. Teori karakter dan karakterisasi oleh DiYanni Robert dan teori fungsi teman khayalan dari Eva Hoff digunakan sebagai dasar penelitian ini. Teknik membaca dan mencatat digunakan untuk mengumpulkan data. Hasil penelitian ini menemukan fakta bahwa tokoh utama dari novel memiliki autisme. Sedangkan teman khayalannya adalah sosok dewasa yang berperan sebagai pelindungnya. Alasan mengapa teman khayalannya bisa bertahan lama adalah karena tokoh utama membutuhkan dia untuk menutupi kelemahannya dan sekaligus menjadi pendampingnya. Oleh karena itu, novel ini menggambarkan betapa pentingnya teman khayalan bagi anak-anak, khususnya bagi anak-anak penyandang disabilitas.
