Abstract

Several factors contribute to shaping children’s character; one of the most influential is the parenting style applied by parents. This study discusses the mother’s parenting style and its effect on the daughter’s character in Everything I Never Told You, Celeste Ng’s first creation, which delivers the topic of an Asian American family. The objectives of the study are to analyze the characteristics and the effects of parenting style in the novel. This study is descriptive-qualitative research and uses the objective approach in which data are taken from narration and dialogues inside the novel. This study uses Parenting Style Theory by Diana Baumrind. Based on the data analysis, it was found that the mother’s parenting style in Everything I Never Told You is identified as an authoritarian parenting style. The most dominant character of the mother’s parenting style is controlling. Then followed by strict characteristics, uses punitive discipline, and focuses on academics. Its effects on the daughter were in the form of bad behavior such as academic failure, rebellion, and being socially inept, along with mental health conditions, including anxiety and suicidal ideation that leads to death. Ada beberapa faktor yang membentuk karakter anak, salah satu yang paling utama adalah pola asuh yang diterapkan oleh orang tua terutama sang ibu. Penelitian ini membahas tentang pola asuh seorang ibu dan efeknya terhadap karakter anak perempuan pada novel Everything I Never Told You, karya pertama Celeste Ng, yang mengangkat tema tentang keluarga Asia Amerika. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk menganalisis karakterisik dan pengaruh gaya pengasuhan yang terdapat pada novel di atas. Penelitian ini bersifat deskriptif kualitatif dan menggunakan pendekatan objektif yang pengambilan datanya didapat dari narasi dan dialog yang ada di dalam novel. Penelitian ini menggunakan teori Parenting Style dari Diana Baumrind. Berdasarkan analisis data, ditemukan bahwa pola asuh sang ibu pada Everything I Never Told You teridentifikasi sebagai pola asuh otoriter. Karakter pola asuh ibu yang paling dominan adalah mengontrol. Kemudian diikuti oleh karakteristik yang tegas serta menggunakan hukuman untuk pendisiplinan dan berfokus pada akademik. Dampak yang ditimbulkan pada anak perempuan berupa perilaku buruk seperti kegagalan akademik, pemberontakan, dan ketidakmampuan untuk bersosialisasi serta kondisi kesehatan mental termasuk kecemasan dan keinginan bunuh diri yang berujung pada kematian
