Abstract
This research is a study of politeness strategies used by the main character in the novel My Name is Memory by Ann Brashares. The problems of this research are to discover the forms of politeness strategies used by the main character and to find out the most dominant forms of the Politeness Strategies used by the main character. Descriptive qualitative was used as a method to collect data and notetaking as well as observation through all dialogs in the novel. The researcher found this novel uses all four types of politeness strategies from the dialogue of the main character in the novel. They are bald-on record, positive politeness, negative politeness and off�record. The results of this study show that there are 30% bald-on record, 40% positive politeness, and 15% negative politeness and 15% off record. Penelitian ini merupakan studi tentang strategi kesopanan yang digunakan oleh tokoh utama dalam novel My Name is Memory karya Ann Brashares. Masalah penelitian ini adalah untuk menemukan bentuk-bentuk strategi kesopanan yang digunakan oleh tokoh utama dan untuk mengetahui bentuk yang paling dominan dari strategi kesopanan yang digunakan oleh tokoh utama. Deskriptif kualitatif digunakan sebagai metode untuk mengumpulkan data dan pencatatan serta pengamatan melalui semua dialog dalam novel. Peneliti menemukan bahwa novel ini menggunakan keempat jenis strategi kesopanan dari dialog karakter utama dalam novel. Jenis strategi tersebut adalah kesantunan secara langsung, kesantunan positif, dan kesantunan negatif dan kesantunan tidak langsung. Hasil dari penelitian ini dapat ditemukan bahwa terdapat 30% kesantunan langsung, 40% kesantunan positif, dan 15% kesantunan negatif dan 15% kesantunan tidak langsun
