Abstract

This research discusses magical realism in The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. In this case, the theory of magical realism put forward by Wendy B. Faris, which consists of five characteristics, that is 1) the irreducible elements, 2) the phenomenal world, 3) unsettling doubts, 4) merging of realms, and 5) disruption of space, time, and identity. This research aims to find the characteristics of magical realism embodied in the novel The Alchemist. The method applied is descriptive qualitative by presenting dialogues and supporting texts to back up the main data of this research. The approach used in this research is an objective approach. The research finding is there are five characteristics of magical realism embodied in The Alchemist such as 1) the irreducible element signified by the existence of myth, beliefs, superstitions, and magical objects and characters, 2) the phenomenal world signified by real locations and professions, 3) unsettling doubts portrayed through the hesitate about the old Gypsy woman, Melchizedek, and Santiago, 4) merging realms signified by the fortune teller in the real world, the belief in Urim and Thummim, and the profession of priest merged with the belief in the seer, and 5) disruption of identity signified by the change of form in the characters Melchizedek and Santiago. Therefore, the researcher categorizes the alchemist by Paulo Coelho as a work of magical realism. Penelitian ini membahas realisme magis pada novel Sang Alkemis karya Paulo Coelho. Dalam hal ini, digunakan teori realisme magis yang dikemukakan oleh Wendy B. Faris, yang terdiri atas lima karakteristik, yaitu 1) elemen yang tak tereduksi, 2) dunia fenomenal, 3) keraguan yang meresahkan 4) alam yang bercampur, dan 5) gangguan pada ruang, waktu dan identitas. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui karakteristik realisme magis yang terwujud dalam novel Sang Alkemis. Metode yang digunakan pada penelitian ini adalah deskriptif kualitatif dengan menyajikan dialog dan teks pendukung untuk menunjang data. Pendekatan yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah pendekatan objektif. Hasil penelitian ini menemukan adanya lima karakteristik realisme magis yang terwujud pada novel The Alchemist seperti 1) elemen tak tereduksi yang ditandai dengan adanya mitos, kepercayaan, takhayul, serta objek dan karakter magis, 2) dunia fenomenal yang ditandai dengan adanya gambaran lokasi dan profesi nyata, 3) keraguan yang meresahkan yang ditandai dengan adanya keraguan terhadap wanita tua Gipsi, Melchizedek, dan Santiago, 4) alam yang bercampur yang ditandai dengan adanya profesi peramal dalam dunia nyata, kepercayaan pada batu Urim dan Tumim, serta profesi pendeta yang dilebur dengan kepercayaan terhadap peramal, 5) gangguan pada identitas yang ditandai dengan adanya perubahan wujud pada karakter Melchizedek dan Santiago. Oleh karena itu, peneliti menggolongkan novel Sang Alkemis karya Paulo Coelho sebagai novel realisme magis.
