Abstract

Neil Gaiman’s novel Stardust is categorized as a fictional work because it contains many extraordinary and impossible things. In this study, the writer wants to prove that the novel Stardust is more than just a fantasy novel which has elements of magical realism. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the elements of magical realism contained in the novel Stardust by using the theory of the five characters of Magical Realism by Wendy B Faris. This research is descriptive qualitative research using an objective approach. In gathering evidence and data, the writer used the literature study method. This research finds that the novel Stardust contains elements of five characteristics of Magical Realism by Wendy B Faris namely; 1) The Irreducible Element marked by the presence of witches and their powers; 2) The Phenomenal World which is marked by the mention of The world's phenomenal places such as the names of famous countries and cities in the world and The world's phenomenal figures such as the names of world famous figures; 3) Unsettling Doubts marked by the presence of ghosts, the event of sitting on a cloud and also the truth potion; 4) Merging Realms which is marked by the merging of two different realms between the ordinary world the “Wall village” and the extraordinary world “Faerie” when Faerie Market is held; and 5) Disruptions of Time, Space, and Identity marked by the main character Tristan who can move places in an instant just by using a magic candle as 'Disruptions of Space', and human in the form of a tree and the fallen star in a human form as 'Disruptions of Identity'. Novel Stardust karya Neil Gaiman dikategorikan sebagai karya fiksi karena mengandung banyak hal yang luar biasa dan mustahil. Dalam penelitian ini penulis ingin membuktikan bahwa novel Stardust lebih dari sekedar novel fantasi yang memiliki unsur realisme magis. Oleh karena itu, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis unsur realisme magis dalam novel Stardust dengan menggunakan teori lima unsur Realisme Magis oleh Wendy B Faris. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian kualitatif deskriptif dengan menggunakan pendekatan objektif. Dalam mengumpulkan bukti dan data, penulis menggunakan metode studi literatur. Penelitian ini menemukan bahwa novel Stardust mengandung lima unsur realisme magis karya Wendy B Faris yaitu; 1) Unsur Tak Tereduksi yang ditandai dengan adanya karakter para penyihir dan kekuatan mereka; 2) Dunia Fenomenal yang ditandai dengan penyebutan nama-nama tempat seperti nama negara atau kota didunia dan tokoh fenomenal dunia seperti nama-nama tokoh terkenal dunia; 3) Keraguan yang Mengganggu yang ditandai dengan adanya hantu, peristiwa duduk di atas awan dan juga ramuan kebenaran; 4) Menggabungkan Alam yang ditandai dengan penggabungan dua alam yang berbeda antara dunia biasa “Desa Tembok” dan dunia magis “Faerie”; dan 5) Gangguan Waktu, Ruang, dan Identitas yang ditandai dengan karakter utama Tristan, yang dapat berpindah tempat dalam sekejap hanya dengan menggunakan lilin ajaib sebagai 'Gangguan Ruang', dan manusia dalam wujud pohon serta bintang jatuh dalam wujud manusia sebagai 'Gangguan Identitas'
