Abstract

Conflict is generally known as an event that contains burden. People can meet certain conflict in their daily life. Certain conflict can affect the personality of the people regarding the impact of the conflict faced by the people. In The Bell Jar, Esther Greenwood depicts as a character facing numerous conflicts throughout her life. These conflicts affect her personalities. This study aims to analyze the personality changes of Esther Greenwood through the conflicts. The first objective is to peel off the kind of conflicts that affect and change the personality of Esther Greenwood. The second objective is to observe the way she deals with the conflicts. It is descriptive qualitative research. The writer also applies the Abrams objective theory. This study is conducted by applying the library research method. The writer collects the data using the reading and note-taking techniques. This study finds that the conflicts that affect and change the personalities of Esther Greenwood are inner conflicts and social conflicts. The inner conflicts mostly take form as a self-esteem, self-actualization, and psychological needs. The social conflicts mostly take form as social conflict of role and social conflict of interest. This study also finds that the way Esther deals with the conflicts is mostly by handling it herself. Depending on the conflict, she also gets help from other to solve the conflicts. Therefore, it can be concluded that inner and social conflicts are the contributors of changes in Esther’s personalities and Esther deals with the conflicts by her own self. Secara umum orang-orang mengenal konflik sebagai suatu musibah. Konflik juga bisa terjadi dalam kehidupan sehari-hari. Beberapa konflik tertentu bisa memiliki dampak yang mampu merubah kepribadian mereka. Hal inilah yang terjadi pada Esther Greenwood dalam novel The Bell Jar. Dalam novel tersebut, dia digambarkan sebagai tokoh yang menghadapi banyak konflik dalam hidupnya. Kemudian, konflik-konflik yang dia lalui mempengaruhi serta bisa mengubah kepribadiannya. Penelitian ini ditujukkan untuk menganalisa perubahan kepribadian yang terjadi pada Esther Greenwood berdasarkan konflik yang dia lalui. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengupas dan mencari tahu konflik apa saja yang mempengaruhi serta bisa mengubah kepribadian dari Esther Greenwod. Tujuan selanjutnya dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui bagaimana cara yang Esther gunakan untuk menghadapi konflik yang dia hadapi. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian deskriptif kualitatif. Penulis menggunakan teori objektif dari Abrams sebagai landasan dalam menganalisa. Studi pustaka dijadikan sebagai metode penelitian dari sang penulis. Dengan menggunakan studi pustaka, peneliti mengumpulkan data dengan cara membaca dan mencatat. Hasil dari penelitian ini, sang peneliti menemukan bahwa konflik batin dan konflik sosial menjadi konflik yang mempengaruhi dan mengubah kepribadian dari Esther. Diantara konflik batin ada self-esteem, self-actualization, dan psychological needs. Sementara itu, konflik sosial yang dilalui oleh Esther berupa social conflict of role dan social conflict of interest. Peneliti juga menemukan bahwa cara Esther untuk menghadapi konflik yang dia lalui adalah dengan mengatasinya sendiri. Akan tetapi, Esther juga mendapatkan bantuan dari orang lain untuk menghadapi konflik yang dia lalui
