Abstract

This study is conducted to analyze the symbols in Dan Brown’s Inferno. There are three problems analyzed in this study: (1) the symbols which has been created by Dan Brown in his novel, Inferno, (2) the meanings of those symbols. (3) the functions of the symbols in the novel In doing the research, the writer uses descriptive qualitative method. She approaches the data with the help of Abram’s theories, Objective Theory and Reader Response Theory. The analysis of this research results in some findings. The writer finds that there are three kinds of symbol in Dan Brown’s Inferno. Those are a symbol in the form of a human character and two symbols in the form of things or objects. The human character symbol is the veiled woman, whereas the symbols in the form of things are Mickey Mouse watch and Botticelli’s Map of Hell. The veiled woman is a symbol of a savior, a helper, a guide and a backstop; Mickey Mouse watch is a symbol of confidence; Botticelli’s Map of Hell is a symbol of salvation. Those symbols are considered contextual symbols whose meanings are got through interpretation. Key words: helper, guide, backstop, savior, interpretation
