Abstract

This thesis is about phrasal verbs in Safe Haven, a novel by Nicholas Sparks. The reason of choosing this novel is the writer can see the braveness from the main character. Also, the novel is about young adult life, thus there might use much phrasal verbs. There are three problems were discussed in this thesis. The first problem is the kinds of phrasal verb found in this novel. Then, after finding out the types of phrasal verbs, the patterns of them were analyzed. The last problem is trying to find out the functions of phrasal verbs. The writer used descriptive qualitative method of this research which means that the results would be words not numbers. Also, in analyzing phrasal verbs, the writer applied some theories to strengthen her opinions. As a result, it is found that phrasal verbs can be divided into two types, both separable and inseparable. After that, both of them can be divided again into two kinds, transitive and intransitive. The answer of the first problem could help the writer to answer the second problem. In second problem, the writer finds that there are many patterns to make a phrasal verb. The main thing to make a phrasal verb is a verb. The verbs could be infinitive, pas tense, and past participle. Then if it is separable, the nouns/pronouns can be put in the middle before the particle. If the direct object is a pronoun, it must be put in the middle not the after the particle. If separable, the direct object must be put after the particle. The particles can be a preposition or an adverb. Then, we can put adverbs to make it as a complete sentence. The last answer of the last problem is the writer finds the two important functions of phrasal verbs, idiomatic expression, sense of the meaning and to express ideas in many ways. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Key words: braveness, Nicholas Sparks, phrasal verbs, kinds, functions, patterns
