Abstract

This graduating paper entitled A Study of English Suffix –ment in The Novel Greet Expectations by Charles Dickens belongs to a qualitative research because the data are in the form of words and the data are not analyzed by using any statistical procedure. The writer used the documentation technique because the data were taken from a text. She analyzed the novel Greet Expectations by Charles Dickens. The writer read the novel Greet Expectations. Then she searched and underlined the words that contain suffix –ment, and she wrote down the words that contain suffix – ment, and put them in the file. The writer analyzed data in three steps; data reduction, data display, and conclusion. She focused on the suffix –ment. She made the table and put the data into the table to answer the questions in the problem formulation. Next, she drew a conclusion. The result of this study show that the structure of suffix –ment can be in the form of X + ment = Xment, and Xed + ment = Xedment. There is a change in the form when an adjective ended with –ed and it is added suffix –ment, the last syllable of –ed is omitted. The meaning of suffix –ment can be as the result, object of an action, action or process, the place of an action, and state or condition resulting of an action. Key words: novel, suffix, ment, form, meaning.
