Abstract
This study is conducted to analyze the inner conflict of Anastasia Steele in E.L James’s novel Fifty Shades of Grey. There are the problems analyzed here: (1) the characterization of Anastasia Steele, (2) the main conflict she experience, (3) the causes of Anastasia inner conflict. The writer uses Character and Characterization theory by Murphy to analyze the personality of Anastasia Steele. In order to answer the second and third questions, the writer uses Abraham Maslow theory (humanism theory) to find out the main conflict experienced by Anastasia and to analyze the causes of Anastasia inner conflict. The data were collected by reading the novel repeatedly, watching the movie, reading some references related to the theory and the novel, taking note of important data, arranging the data, classifying the important data, and drawing the conclusion. The analysis of this research results in some findings. The writer finds Anastasia’s characterization, which are attractive, kind, smart, bashful, independent, and stubborn. The main conflict experienced by Anastasia is a dilemma in making decision for the betterment of her life. The causes of her inner conflict because of her needs based on Maslow five hierarchies of human needs has not been fulfilled well. The causes of Anastasia inner conflict is also shown in the novel.
