Abstract

This research analyses the idiomatic expressions in “A Bear Called Paddington” novel by Michael Bond. Idiom is one of the non-literal language. The writer concerns the importance of studying idiomatic expressions in order to communicate well. The method of research applied in this study uses descriptive quantitative method. Descriptive research is used to describe the existing phenomena of idiomatic expressions and the types of meaning as accurately as possible. Qualitative method provides results that are rich and detailed without using the statistic calculation. The researcher has found 170 idiomatic expressions based on Jennifer Seidl and W. McMordie (1988) and McCarthy and O’Dell (2002, 2003, 2010) which are included to 17 kinds of idiomatic expressions. Those are 2 Informal Idioms, 1 Verbal Idiom, 1 Idiomatic Pair of Adjectives, 1 Idiomatic Pair of Nouns, 1 Idiomatic Pair of Adverbs, 5 Idioms containing special key words Parts of the Body, 1 Idiom containing Special Keywords of Colour, 2 Idioms containing Special Keywords of Time, 3 Idioms with Comparisons, 2 Keywords with Idiomatic Uses of Adjectives and Adverbs, 3 Keywords with Idiomatic Uses of Nouns, 1 Keyword with Idiomatic Uses of Miscellaneous, 6 Idioms with Prepositions, 135 Phrasal Verbs, 2 Euphemisms, 3 Idioms from the Topic Area of Nature and 1 Whole Clauses or Sentences idiom. It can be concluded that phrasal verb idioms dominate the finding. The second answer is that of the 7 types of meaning by Leech (1981), the researcher found 6 types of meaning from 170 idiomatic expressions which are 97 Conceptual meaning, 63 Connotative meaning, 3 Social meaning, 5 Affective meaning, 1 Reflected meaning and 1 Collocative meaning. The conceptual meaning dominates the result of types of meaning’s classification. It can be concluded that the domination of the types of meaning is the conceptual meaning.
