Abstract

The study concerns passive voice found in The Jakarta Post and Jakarta Globe. The writer is challenged to investigate passive structures as it is only familiar with auxiliary be and a past participle so that some other structures are not able to recognize. The study discusses three problems. The first problem is to observe the passive voices structures used in The Jakarta Post and Jakarta Globe. The second problem is to investigate the percentage of passive voice’s frequency found in The Jakarta Post and Jakarta Globe. The third is to find out the function of the passive voice found in those online newspapers. The method of this study is library research. The data are gathered from references book which related to the theory of passive voices and other related study. Also, several previous theses are analyzed to take their findings about the related research. The first answer for the first problem shows the structures of passive voices found in The Jakarta Post and Jakarta Globe: bare passive, modals verb passive, be with past participle, infinitives passive, linking verb passive, and gerund passives. Second, the most used structure of passives on both online newspapers is be with a past participle structure as many as 57% and 46% respectively from Jakarta Globe and Jakarta Post. Furthermore, the function of the short passive are given into three division: the agent is not known, unimportant, or obvious, the emphasis is on the action and subject of the active verb would be “people”.
