Abstract

This research aimed to analyze risk-taking journey and the motivations for taking risk using the novel The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho as the main data. This research addresses two problems; 1) What risk-taking journey of Santiago portrayed in The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho? and 2) How do Santiago's motivations for taking risks align with the novel's themes of dreams and destiny, and what insights can readers draw from his journey in the context of their own aspirations and life journeys? By using a qualitative method, this study provides a detailed description of risk-taking journey and the motivations for taking risk using the novel The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. This study used the theories of Deci & Ryan and Abraham Maslow to classify and analyze the data. According to Deci & Ryan, Self-determination theory (SDT) posits that human motivation is intrinsically driven by the need for competence, autonomy, and relatedness, while according to Abraham Maslow human motivation, with basic physiological needs at the bottom, followed by safety needs, love and belonging needs, esteem needs, and finally, self-actualization at the top. As a result, it was found that the risk-taking journey that leaving the comfort zone, trusting strangers, working in a crystal shop, crossing the desert, encounter with the alchemist, facing fear, and realizing the true treasure and the motivations are quest for personal legend, dream of hidden treasure, belief in omens, dreams as guides to destiny, risk-taking as a path to fulfilling destiny, and courage to follow the heart.
