Abstract

Friendship is one of the important aspects of human social life that plays a significant role in shaping personality. This study explores the role of friendship in the personality development of Charlie, the main character in the novel The perks of being a wallflower. Therefore, this study has three objectives: 1) to analyze Charlie’s personality, 2) to analyze the personality development experienced by Charlie, and 3) to analyze the role of friendship in Charlie's personality development. This study uses Elizabeth Hurlock's theory of personality development to analyze how social interactions and emotional support from his friends contribute to Charlie's personality development. This research is a descriptive qualitative research and the researcher uses literary objective theory as the basis of theory and analysis. The researcher uses reading and taking note techniques to collect research data. The findings of this study are Charlie's personality as a wallflower, shy, and emotional. Therefore, Charlie’s personality changed into open-minded, brave, and mature. Charlie's personality development because of his friendship role with Patrick and Sam who have values of validation & competence, peer protection, morality. In this process, Charlie begin to develop self-confidence, the ability to express himself and build deeper relationships with others.
