Abstract

This study aims to analyze the conflicts faced by Iris, a central character in Jacqueline Woodson’s Red at the Bone, and to examine the effects of these conflicts in her life. The primary objective of this study is twofold: first, to identify and categorize the types of conflict faced by Iris in Red at the Bone, second, to analyze the effects of the conflict that Iris faces depicted in Red at the Bone. Using a qualitative approach, the research delves into the various forms of conflict that shape Iris' experiences, both internal and external. The result of internal conflicts includes Iris and her Responsibility, and Iris and her ambition. The external conflicts are Iris with her parents, Iris with Melody, Iris with Aubrey, and Iris with society. Moreover, there are two types of impacts that occur as result of conflicts faced by Iris, namely positive impact and negative impact. The positive impacts in conflicts are pursuing education and having a better relationship with Melody, and the negative impact is the feeling guilty towards Aubrey
