Abstract
This research examines the implementation of politeness strategies employed by Kylo Ren in "Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker." Using Brown and Levinson's politeness theory as a theoretical framework, the research aims to identify and analyze the types of politeness strategies utilized in the character's dialogue throughout the film. The study employs a qualitative descriptive method, with data collection conducted through observation and note-taking techniques. The findings reveal that Kylo Ren predominantly uses positive politeness strategies, with Strategy 2 being the most frequent at 25%, followed by Strategy 5 and Strategy 9 at 18% each. Strategy 1 accounts for 15% of the instances, while Strategies 3 and 11 each represent 6%. Strategies 10 and 13 show the lowest frequency at 3% each. In terms of negative politeness, only Strategy 2 was observed, occurring in 6% of the analyzed dialogue. These findings suggest that the character's communication style primarily emphasizes building rapport and minimizing social distance through positive politeness strategies.
