Abstract

The paper examines the non-observance maxim and the dominant type found in Viral Hit comic season 1. The theories used are Paul Grice’s theory for maxim, Joan Cutting’s for context analysis, and Yule’s pragmatic. In order to reduce misunderstanding, Paul Grice incorporates the cooperation principle, also known as the maxim. The phenomenon where a maxim is fulfilled is called an observance maxim, whereas the non-observance maxim refers to the phenomenon of not following maxims. The analytical process uses a qualitative descriptive methodology and obtained by reading and note-taking. The research data were taken from the dialogue that involved Hobin Yoo and another character. Around 32 data were found, including 27 data of flouting maxim (quality 3, quantity 6, relevance 9, manner 9) and 5 data of violating of maxim quality. The research concludes that the most dominant types are the flouting of maxim relevance and flouting of maxim manner with the same amount of data 9 in total. Therefore, it is followed by flouting maxim of quantity with 6 data, violating the maxim of quality with 5 data, and finally, flouting maxim of quality with 3 data in total.
