Abstract

When shopping, many people struggle to read expiration dates on product packaging due to small font sizes and inconsistent formatting. This can lead to accidental consumption of expired products, posing health risks such as food poisoning or allergic reactions. To address this issue, a mobile application was developed that detects expiration dates using Optical Character Recognition (OCR) and Text to Speech (TTS) technologies. The application scans product packaging, recognizes expiration dates, and reads them aloud to assist users in verifying product safety. The research methodology includes requirements analysis, application development utilizing OCR and TTS, and performance evaluation using Mean Absolute Error (MAE) and character recognition accuracy metrics. Test results show an average MAE of 0.6, indicating a low reading error rate, and a character recognition accuracy of 93.3%. These outcomes suggest that the application effectively aids users in identifying expiration dates and has the potential to reduce the risk of consuming unsafe products. Keywords: Optical Character Recognition, Text to Speech, Expiration Date
