Abstract
This study explores Enid Blyton's Summer term at St. Clare by examining the concept of indirect characterisation, twelve characters whose interactions with each other are examined based on their behaviours, conversations, internal monologues, and their social dynamics. It does not use descriptive passages directly; instead, the author builds the traits of the characters by degrees of disclosure, thus letting the readers to understand them in context. There are four narrative structures discovered to be central in this process: the behavioural patterns, use of words, interpersonal relations, and positioning of opposite character qualities. Pat, Isabel, Carlotta, and Prudence, the main characters, are not described as psychologically flat; they are based on emotional growth and ethical questions. The results point at the fact that the use of indirect characterisation not only contributes to augmenting the narrational complexity, but can also be seen as an educational platform, as a tool used to instil empathy, critical approach and morality in young readers, when delivered through a sophisticated conveying of personality.
