Abstract
This study analyzes the clash of Moslem cultures in America as reflected in Laila Halaby's novel Once in a Promised Land. Using an objective approach and Tajfel and Turner's Social Identity theory, this study explores how the characters in the novel experience identity crisis, discrimination, and marginalization as a result of cultural differences and stereotypes post-9/11. The research method used is literary text analysis by examining the narrative, characterization, and social conflict that depicts the challenges faced by Moslem immigrants in adjusting to the prejudiced American environment. The results of the study show that Moslem identity in this novel is often constructed negatively by the dominant society, thus affecting the social and psychological interactions of the main characters. The conclusion of this study is that the clash of cultures in this novel reflects the complexity of Moslem identity in America, where individuals try to balance between maintaining their original culture and adjusting to new social norms. To deepen the analysis, this study also incorporates supporting theories such as Acculturation Theory, Third Space Theory, Cultural Identity Theory, and Labeling Theory to examine identity dynamics from psychological and intercultural perspectives.
