Abstract
This study aims to analyze the deixis found in the English translation of Surah Yusuf by Saheeh International. Surah Yusuf is one of the surahs in the Qur'an that is narrative in nature. This study aims to reveal the types of deixis in Surah Yusuf English translation by Saheeh International and its contribution to readers' understanding. This study uses descriptive qualitative method and deixis theory by Stephen C. Levinson to analyze the verses and identify the types of deixis in Surah Yusuf. According to Levinson, deixis is divided into five types, namely persona deixis, time deixis, place deixis, discourse deixis, and social deixis. The result of this study shows that out of 111 verses, there are five types of deixis in Surah Yusuf English Translation by Saheeh International. There are 468 data (63.85%) of persona deixis, 48 data (6.55%) of time deixis, 44 data (6.00%) of place deixis, 78 data (10.64%) of discourse deixis, and 95 data (12.96%) of social deixis. The most dominant deixis is persona deixis. Each deixis contributes to the reader's understanding according to its function. There are three levels of comprehension difficulty for readers, namely low, medium, and high. The low level is when the referents of the deixis are found in the same verse. The medium level is when it requires previous context to be understood. Finally, the high level is when already knowing the context but it is still difficult to understand.
