Abstract
Grief is generally known only as a response to the loss of someone or something special. However, knowledge about how grief is categorized, can develop into longterm grief, and how dealing with grief can change one’s behavior is rarely known. This research analyzed the grief as depicted in Shirley Jackson novel We Have Always Lived in the Castle. The problem of this novel lies within its theme which is grief. It includes the significant event that becomes the source of grief but also develops the grief itself and how it affects the characters. This study uses the Stages of Grief by Elisabeth Kübler-Ross with David Kessler sixth stage as an addition and the Objective analysis which focuses on the development and behavior of characters in the We Have Always Lived in the Castle novels. The stages of grief used in this research are denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. The results of the research show how the characters change their behavior and lifestyle to deal with the grief. The change in behavior is unique to each character even if the roots of the problem are the same and it causes them to have completely different behavior before and after the incident. Merricat becomes a gothic with mysterious personality and magical thinking, Constance becomes submissive woman, and Uncle Julian becomes a disabled man who failed to move on from his past.
