Abstract

This research aims to analyse directive speech acts in the Netflix series Arcane: League of Legends Season 1. Directive speech acts refer to speech that is intended to make the listener act, such as a command, request, suggestion, or question. This act of speech is important to understand how characters assert power, establish relationships, and influence outcomes in fictional narratives. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method combined with simple quantitative analysis. The theory used is the speech action theory of Searle (1969) and Yule (1996), which classifies directives into four types: commands, requests, questions, and suggestions. Data were collected through observation and speech transcription from the nine episodes in the series. A total of 75 directive speech acts were successfully identified. The results showed that the most dominant type was command (50), followed by asking (5), requests (7), and suggestions (13). These findings suggest that Arcane relies heavily on authoritative and goal-oriented language to depict social conflicts, hierarchies, and dynamics between characters.
