Abstract

Intelligence is an essential aspect of human life as it helps individuals think, make decisions, and solve problems. In Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator, intelligence is portrayed as a crucial element that shapes the life of Willy Wonka, both as an inventor and an entrepreneur. Based on the significance of intelligence in his character, this study aims to analyse the portrayal of intelligence in the two novels. The first objective is to examine why intelligence is important in Willy Wonka’s life. The second objective is to analyse how Wonka applies his intelligence in various situations. This research is a descriptive qualitative study that applies Robert J. Sternberg’s Triarchic Theory of Intelligence, which includes analytical, creative, and practical intelligence. The study is conducted using the library research method, and data are collected through reading and note-taking techniques. The findings reveal that intelligence plays a central role in supporting Wonka’s decisions, innovations, and problem-solving abilities. He is depicted as a character who uses analytical thinking, creative ideas, and practical actions to face challenges and maintain his uniqueness. Thus, the novels indicate that intelligence is a fundamental factor contributing to Wonka’s success.
