Abstract
This research discusses the inner conflicts experienced by Evelyn Hugo, the main character in The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid, in the process of building and adjusting her identity. The purpose of this study is to explain the main reasons behind Evelyn’s identity construction and the ways she creates, adjusts, and hides her identity as a response to her inner desires and outside pressures. This study uses the objective approach by M. H. Abrams to analyze the literary elements in the novel and Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytic theory to understand the psychological side of Evelyn’s struggles. The research uses a qualitative method, with data taken from quotations in the novel and supported by academic sources. The result shows that Evelyn’s identity is a survival strategy influenced by childhood trauma, personal ambition, social expectations, and fear of rejection. She changes her appearance, plays certain roles in public, and hides her real self to meet the demands of the entertainment world and to keep her emotions under control. In the end, Evelyn chooses to tell the truth about who she is, showing that identity is not something fixed, but something shaped by personal struggles and social influence.
