Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effects of parenting style on the character development of Anne in Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery. The research uses an objective literary approach and Diana Baumrind’s theory of parenting styles, with a focus on the authoritative type. The primary data source is the novel itself, supported by relevant books, journals, and articles. The analysis reveals that although Marilla and Matthew employ different approaches, Marilla being strict and Matthew being gentle, they both provide Anne with emotional support and stability. This authoritative parenting style helps transform Anne from a wounded, insecure child into a confident, responsible, and empathetic young woman. The findings highlight how consistent and supportive parenting can play a crucial role in emotional healing and character formation.
