Abstract
Identity passing becomes a central issue in The Vanishing Half, where Estella Vignes’s transformation serves as a way to explore identity, race, and selfperception. This study aims to analyze the phenomenon of identity passing through the character of Estella Vignes. The first objective is to understand the reasons that lead Estella to pass her identity. The second objective is to examine how she practices identity passing in her life. This is a descriptive qualitative study that uses the objective approach by M.H. Abrams and the theory of identity passing by Elaine Ginsberg. The data are collected through reading and notetaking techniques. The findings show that Estella’s decision to pass is driven by psychological trauma, fear of racial violence, and her desire for comfort and privilege. Her practice of passing is seen in how she changes her appearance, hides her background, and performs the identity of a White woman in a racially biased society. The analysis shows that Estella’s identity is not something fixed or passed down, but something she constructs and performs in response to external social conditions. These findings show that identity passing is both a survival strategy and a personal sacrifice. The study concludes that Estella’s case reflects the complexity of racial identity as something fluid and performative, shaped by historical, social, and personal forces.
