Abstract

Bakery shop is one of the fastest-growing culinary businesses in Yogyakarta. The increasing number of international customers has led bakery shops to provide English menus. This study aims to analyze the translation procedure based on Peter Newmark's theory applied to the menus from Indonesian to English in two bakeries in Yogyakarta, namely The Harvest and ViaVia Artisan Bakery. This research uses a qualitative method with the main data obtained from the menus in both bakeries. The result stated that 8 out of 17 procedures were found. The writer found 126 data, with the couplets procedure dominating at 96 data. Other procedures found were through translation (9 data), functional equivalent (7 data), reduction (6 data), descriptive equivalent (2 data), and modulation (4 data). Other procedures, such as transference and cultural equivalent, were found in only 1 datum. Translation procedures that are not found include shift, naturalization, synonymy, recognized translation, compensation, componential analysis, expansion, notes, and paraphrase.
