Abstract

Misunderstandings frequently arise in conversation. Particularly in intercultural communication. This research discusses the linguistic barriers and non-verbal communication strategies faced by the lead actor in the film The Terminal (2004), Viktor. Linguistic barriers are communication failures that often occur due to inadequate language skills. This research focuses on the types of linguistic barriers and non-verbal communication strategies used by Viktor to overcome these barriers. This study utilizes Holmes & Wilson's linguistic barriers theory, Hashmi & Waheed's non-verbal communication theory. The data obtained in this study were collected through observation of the film itself, with secondary data in the form of film transcripts. Then analyzed using a qualitative descriptive method with a pragmatic approach. The data that has been obtained is then classified based on the types of linguistic barriers that exist and the non-verbal communication strategies used. The results of the study show that lexical barriers are the most frequent barriers, followed by phonological barriers, and finally grammatical barriers. These barriers often appear in the context when Viktor is in a transactional purpose. To overcome these barriers, Viktor uses non-verbal communication strategies such as gestures, tone of voice, and facial expressions. For example, he points to objects or uses different intonation. These strategies help Viktor to understand and achieve effective communication.
