Abstract

This thesis entitled A Comparative Study of Illocutionary Acts in InaugurationSpeeches of Jokowi (2019) and Prabowo (2024) aims to analyze the types andthemost dominant illocutionary acts in Jokowi and Prabowo inauguration speeches. In this study, the researcher discusses two main problems: 1) What types of illocutionary acts are found in the inauguration speeches of Jokowi and Prabowo?and 2) What is the most dominant type illocutionary acts in Jokowi and Prabowoinauguration speeches? This study uses a qualitative research method withacomparative approach. The data sources are the official transcripts and YouTubevideos of Jokowi’s 2019 and Prabowo’s 2024 inauguration speeches. The writer applies John Searle’s theory of speech acts, which classifies illocutionary acts intofive categories: assertives, directives, commissives, expressives, and declaratives. The analysis technique includes data reduction, data display, and conclusiondrawing. As a result, the researcher found 84 illocutionary acts in Jokowi’s speechand 118 in Prabowo’s speech. Jokowi’s most dominant illocutionary acts areassertives (30 data or 35.71%) and directives (26 data or 30.95%), whichemphasize goal-setting and instruction. On the other hand, Prabowo’s speechisdominated by expressives (45 data or 38.14%) and directives (34 data or 28.81%), which highlight gratitude, unity, and moral leadership. These findings suggest that each president uses different illocutionary strategies based on what the speaker trying to achieve.
