Abstract
This study aims to analyze courage through the character of Beatrice “Tris” Prior as the main character in the novel Divergent by Veronica Roth. The first objective is to classify the types of courage demonstrated by Tris, while the second objective is to identify the factors that influence her courageous actions. The analysis uses Dungate’s theory of six types of courage to classify courage into six categories, and a study conducted by Rate et al. to identify the factors that encourage courageous actions. This study is a qualitative descriptive study with an objective approach. The data used consists of two types, namely primary data in the form of the novel Divergent, and secondary data in the form of books, journals, and relevant articles. The results show that Tris displays five of the six types of courage, namely: (1) physical courage, seen when she faces dangerous challenges in the Dauntless initiation process; (2) social courage, seen from her courageous attitude against injustice; (3) intellectual courage, shown through her critical thinking towards the faction system and acceptance of her identity; (4) moral courage, reflected in making difficult decisions; and (5) emotional courage, seen when she faces trauma, loss, and fear. The factors that influence Tris’ courage include: (1) external circumstances, come from pressure from the social environment and faction system; (2) affective factors, arise from feelings such as empathy, fear, and grief; and (3) motivational factors, in the form of internal encouragement that comes from the support of those closest to her.
