Abstract
This study examines politeness strategies in the film The Trial of the Chicago 7 using Brown and Levinson’s (1987) theory. Its aim is to identify the types of politeness strategies employed and the factors influencing their selection in courtroom interactions. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, the data were collected from selected dialogues containing elements of politeness. The analysis results show that all four types of strategies bald on record, positive politeness, negative politeness, and off record are used by the characters, with bald on record being the most dominant strategy, especially in contexts demanding assertiveness and clarity. This strategy is chosen based on factors such as power, social distance, and the level of imposition. The findings reveal that politeness strategies not only maintain social relationships but also reflect power relations and ideology within legal discourse. This study is expected to enrich pragmatic studies, particularly in understanding formal communication in film media.
