Abstract
This study aims to analyze the translation strategies used in rendering allusions found in Martin Luther King Jr.’s I Have a Dream speech into Indonesian. Allusions, as culturally embedded references, often present challenges in translation due to their reliance on shared historical, religious, or literary knowledge. Using a qualitative descriptive method, this research examines how allusions were identified, categorized, and translated in two Indonesian versions of the speech: one from Nias Online (2007) and the other from Kompas.com (2021). The study collected 34 allusions from the speech and categorized them using Leppihalme’s typology, which includes Proper-Name Allusions, Key-Phrase Allusions, Situational Allusions, and Genre-Based Allusions. To analyze the translation strategies, the writer adopted an adapted seven-strategy model: Retention, Addition, Substitution, Paraphrase, Footnote, and Omission. Each strategy was applied differently depending on the nature of the allusion and the cultural familiarity of the Indonesian audience. The findings show that KeyPhrase Allusions are the most dominant type, accounting for 17 out of 34 allusions. In terms of strategy, Retention was most frequently used, especially for biblical and well-known references. The study concludes that translators prioritize communicative clarity while still attempting to preserve rhetorical and cultural meaning. The translator’s decisions reflect a balance between cultural fidelity and audience accessibility, supporting theoretical perspectives from Leppihalme (1997), Nida & Taber (1974), and Newmark (1988).
